Netflix is Testing Shuffling Episodes for TV Shows

Netflix is Testing Shuffling Episodes for TV Shows

Netflix has already made it clear that it’s not entirely against the idea of watching television shows out of order. And now the company is testing that capability with a wider audience. Netflix is currently toying with the idea of shuffling random episodes of a TV show where it might not matter the order they’re watched in.

It isn’t a secret that there are some TV series that don’t need to be watched in any particular order, especially if you have already watched all of the episodes available. And if you’re just putting a show on in the background, the particular order those episodes come up in might not matter. Which is why Netflix is currently testing two different ways to shuffle episodes in popular shows.

The first is a dedicated section within the Netflix app itself, “Play a Popular Episode” with a shuffle icon next to it. This will launch an episode at random within the show’s seasons, and then continue to shuffle which episode comes up next as long as you keep watching. The other method is a “random episode” option within the playback section of a series.

Right now it looks like Netflix is testing the feature with shows like Our Planet, The Office, Arrested Development, Friends, and others of this nature. As mentioned earlier, Netflix tested random episodes plying for a user before, courtesy of the anthology series Love, Death + Robots. This seems a bit more user-friendly, though, as they get to choose to launch the random nature of episode deliveries.

Right now, Netflix is only testing this feature on Android devices. However, it is likely that, as long as things go well, the feature could expand to iOS and other devices in the near future.

In related Netflix news, the company recently launched a brand new animation for its logo which shows in front of original content. The company also recently explained why “technical limitations” made it impossible to keep AirPlay support in its app.
Our Take

This makes a lot of sense for the shows that are currently listed, as well basically any anthology series or nature series as each episode tends to have its own theme. But obviously one has to hope this feature doesn’t creep into other series where the sequential narrative is far more important.Sponsor ads:

Samsung Galaxy Fold Stumbles Under the Pressure, But May Still be a Sign of the Future

Finding a way to turn a trend into a longstanding feature is tough. Some things, like modular smartphones, don’t pick up steam like some companies thought they might. But if there is one thing to say about Samsung, it’s that the company does have a keen eye on picking out winners.

The biggest, of course, is the big screen on a smartphone. This is something that Apple fought back against for quite some time, but Samsung dragged the rest of the smartphone market along with it. Now smartphone displays are huge, bezels are smaller, and the general consensus seems to be that this is a good thing. The newer trend, that Samsung didn’t start (but didn’t ignore) is multiple cameras on the back (and front!) of our phones.

One other trend that might not take off? Pop-out cameras. That seems to be on shaky ground.

But foldable phones do feel like the future. A futuristic one, yes, but almost inevitable. Samsung has been keen to this idea for years, first showing off its vision for this particular reality way back in 2014. Now it’s 2019 and the company is on the cusp of launching its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. There has been a lot of hypes, and a lot of questions, about this device, and this week we’ve started to get some answers. Unfortunately, they’re not all positive.

The Verge‘s Dieter Bohn has done a solid job of keeping track of his time with the Galaxy Fold. Like others, he started off with pretty positive remarks about Samsung’s first foldable phone, coming away pleasantly surprised with the handset. And then things took a turn for the worst. Bohn, along with several other reviewers, reported that the display on their Galaxy Fold was failing. Some showed lines on the screen, others were unresponsive. Bohn, for instance, had almost all of the above, along with a bulge under the screen right along the hinge that made it unusable.

Bohn says his problems were not directly tied to the protective layer on the phone’s primary display, which Samsung would very much like people not to remove. Others, though, noted that after they did remove it the phone’s screen became effectively useless and broken. Basically, Samsung started on a pretty high note and then things came crashing down.

Today, Bohn published his review for the Galaxy Fold. The primary takeaway here is that he isn’t going to recommend anyone buy the phone, and that it has a ton of issues aside from the major hardware failing his first unit had:

“But it is worth thinking about. Even though I would never buy the Galaxy Fold and wouldn’t recommend anybody else does either, I’m going to keep thinking about it. Because there might be the start of something really new here, something really different.”

And in the review, Bohn notes many of the failings that the Galaxy Fold has, on top of the major issues mentioned above. Over the course of the review, it was discovered, for example, that the display refresh rate on the primary screen is pretty bad, and you can see “jelly scrolling” with the right side scrolling at a different speed than the left side of the screen. The primary display’s screen is plastic, and it can get pretty banged up pretty easily. The notch on the inside is massive. And so on.

You should head through the source link above and check out the full review. It’s certainly worth watching, even if it is basically a confirmation that the Galaxy Fold is a first-edition handset that should probably be skipped. Especially because it costs $1,980, and some of the problems should not be present on a premium smartphone with a price tag that high.

But I can’t help but see the (albeit faint) positives here. Just like Bohn noted in his own review, the foldable smartphone does feel like this is the future of our devices –the ability to have a primary phone and a tablet (not a phablet) in one device– and maybe the perceived failure of the Galaxy Fold is just a bit of a stumble on our inevitable arrival to that future.Sponsor ads:

There’s also the fact that Samsung isn’t the only company going down this route. We have the Huawei Mate X, and Motorola’s return to the RAZR brand name coming down the pipe. There will be others. Even Apple is rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone.

There is a lot of promise in the Galaxy Fold, even if the first execution wasn’t great. But Samsung now has something to build on, and considering how gung-ho Samsung is for this type of device it’s hard to imagine they’re going to abandon the effort now. It was never going to fly off the shelves anyway. But now Samsung has a blueprint, can improve upon the design and the software, and launch something next year that’s actually worthwhile.

Also, the palm rejection bug, which caused the iPad to not ignore another touch input alongside an Apple Pencil, has now been fixed.

As far as bugs go, users may experience unexpected behavior if they change the system time to May 1 in the Japanese calendar and time format.

You can download this update for your compatible iPhone, iPad, or iPod over-the-air. Alternatively, you can use the IPSW firmware file given below and perform an upgrade using iTunes.

As always, there’s no point in updating to such a minor update, unless you live in Japan and have to switch to the new era.

If, however, you are experiencing the video lag and palm rejection bugs on the first beta update, move to the latest update as soon as possible.

Jailbreak enthusiasts should stay away from any iOS 12.3 beta version and stick to iOS 12.1.2 and below. Sponsor ads:

5 Mac Apps Worth Checking Out - April 2019

Apps designed for the Mac often don't receive as much attention as apps made for iOS devices, so we have a series here at MacRumors that's designed to highlight useful and interesting Mac apps that are worth checking out and potentially investing in.

CloudApp (Free) - CloudApp is a handy app that lets you share files, screenshots, videos, screen recordings, and more, via the cloud. You can drag a file into CloudApp and it'll be uploaded to the cloud and copied to your clipboard so you can paste the file into Slack, email, Messages, or elsewhere. You can annotate screenshots and files, making it a great way to communicate when collaborative editing is needed. CloudApp is free, but premium tiers with additional features are available starting at $10/month or $8/month on an annual plan.

Little Snitch ($45) - Little Snitch monitors all of the traffic on your Mac so you can see what apps are sending data, and where. It basically makes all of your Internet connections visible and gives you control over them, letting you approve or restrict what's being sent from your Mac. There's a world map so you can see where connections are being made, and there are modes for getting instant notifications or letting it run in the background.

Stack (Free) - Stack is a Mac app that's sort of an internet launchpad for web apps, describing itself as an "internet OS." It houses all the websites you might want to keep tabs on like Facebook, Messenger, Gmail, Slack, and more, keeping them in one convenient place. You can organize your different apps into categories, and the app provides unified notifications so you don't miss anything.

Unshaky (Free) - Unshaky is not an Apple-sanctioned app, and that's because it's meant to fix a major Apple problem - the faulty MacBook Pro keyboard. Unshaky is designed for people who have keys where the letters repeat, as it's able to detect the extra presses and eliminate them. We haven't tried this app ourselves because we don't have a keyboard with repeating letters, but it has positive reviews as a temporary fix from those who are having issues. If you have a repeating key you'll need to get a repair from Apple, but this can help while you wait.

AirBuddy ($5) - AirBuddy is a Mac app for the AirPods. It lets you pair your AirPods to your Mac the same way you do on your iPhone - just by opening up the AirPods case next to your Mac and then clicking. It's super simple, but if you use your AirPods with your Mac often, it's invaluable. A Batteries Notification Center widget on Mac displays AirPods battery life, charging case battery life, and the battery life of your Mac. The AirBuddy app works with Macs that support Bluetooth LE, which is all modern machines.

This month's picks include apps for sharing files, organizing web apps, monitoring internet traffic, fixing repeating keys on a broken MacBook keyboard, and quickly pairing your AirPods to your Mac. Many of the apps we're highlighting this month were chosen by our MacRumors forum members.

If you have a favorite must-have Mac app that we haven't highlighted yet, let us know in the comments, and we might feature it in a future video. Many of this month's app picks came directly from recommendations from our forum members, and it's these recommendations that have helped make this series useful. Sponsor ads:
